Shy children find socialising with their peers difficult. You may have a few friends but not a group. You could be handcuffed to one friend to avoid loneliness. You are scared of being rejected so you avoid challenging anyone, even a friend. You are terrified of doing the wrong thing, and don't stand up for yourself when attacked. You react to stress by being very anxious or freezing up. You fear attention and embarrassment. You are left alone, unsupported by your peer group. If you're secretive, it's hard to tell your parents or teacher, so you become more isolated. Beware that making friends with a shy, aloof child is hard. When you reject children who are trying to be friendly, they will feel upset and may bully back.
