Practice makes it better

Some children don't like change. If they protest, 'But that'snot me!' you can reply, 'Well, who is it?' Everyone changes physically all the time, learns new skills and adapts to new situations. At first it feels odd, but as you learn something new you progress from ignorance and confusion to using it automatically and naturally.

• Help your child understand that he will still be the same person he was before he learnt how to tie shoelaces, play football or learn new computer games, and will be the same child once he learns how to deal with bullies, except he will feel better!

• Encourage your child to learn comfortable bully-blocking skills.

• Work out when and how often you can help your child practise.

• A tape recorder, a video recorder and/or a diary can be useful.
