Sometimes a child I've been helping returns a few weeks later and tells me that she didn't practise because nobody bullied her. I feign surprise and say, 'It's a pity they didn't bully you because now we don't know which retorts work.' Then I say, 'Well, I've been too busy to go to the school and bribe the bullies to stop, did your parents bribe them?' 'No,' she laughs.
Then I ask the child, 'Why did the bullies stop?'
Eventually, she realises that the bullies changed because she changed her behaviours.
