How dare they criticise my family

Most family members know that they will experience bantering and teasing at one stage or another. Yet children hate hearing members of their family, especially their mother, criticised by others. The same child who calls her mother or sister a 'bitch' or 'tart' at home becomes upset if someone else says, 'Your mother/sister is a slut' or 'Your mother/brother is fat'. The tease is designed to provoke, regardless of truth. The child who dislikes others attacking her family becomes upset, overreacts and fights back. The only thing she proves is her sensitivity. Everyone knows that no family is perfect.

Tell your child: When you accept yourself and your family, you can respond. If you become upset when your family is criticised, discuss family secrets with someone you trust to change your attitude and response.
