How to Set Goals
Failure or depression or some long-term or recent trauma. Or it could be you're putting so much pressure on your kid that he's stressed out about meeting your expectations and may not have the necessary skills or natural talent to fulfill your goals. In some cases, kids who appear to be lazy are in fact suffering from a lingering, low-level chronic illness. Be sure to have your child's health evaluated.
The first step to changing your kid's impatient attitude is simply to make him wait. Don't give in to his whims, don't stop your conversation to answer his unnecessary questions, and don't feel sorry for him because he didn't get what he wants just when he wanted it. Not only is it a big part of growing up, but researchers find that patient kids have an advantage in life. Scientific studies have actually proven that patience is crucial for all of us to get what we want and need in life. It helps achieve goals, resolve conflicts, and just plain enjoy life, moment by moment.
Second, I always set extremely high goals for myself. Here, I was thinking well outside the box. Early in my life, I set a goal to be a military flyer and ultimately an astronaut. Too many kids set their goals based upon what their parents have done with their lives or what their friends intend to do with theirs or what their brothers and sisters are doing. Forget that You have your own life. Don't set goals based on others. Set your own goals and set them very high. None of us can be anything we dream to be. We all have boundaries. They might be boundaries of talent A case in point is Michael Jordan. His talent as a basketball player didn't extend to baseball. We might have physical limits bad eyesight, asthma, diabetes, and so on. My dad was in a wheelchair because of polio. But, within our boundaries, we should be setting the highest possible goals for ourselves. If you shoot for the stars and fall a little short and land on the moon, you haven't failed. You've done yourself a...
If you are looking for a playgroup for your kids with likeminded families, and some fellow secular parents to get to know and swap ideas with, you might be best served by creating something informal. Planning and organizing a more formal group can be burdensome and unnecessary if your goals are that simple. If, on the other hand, your goals are to create a group that has more formal educational outcomes like teaching ethics, critical thinking, comparative religions, freethought history, scientific inquiry, etc. then you may indeed want and need the group to be more formalized. You'll probably be crafting some lesson plans and buying supplies for lessons, so you want to know how many kids are coming ahead of time. You may need to work with a more specific age group, and if you're going through this effort, you may want to promote your group to the broader community.
Whilst as parents we have a responsibility (and a desire) to be our child's advocate and to do our very best to maximize his or her full potential, life often seems to be a constant fight for understanding and support. I know only too well how wearing this can be and as we battle, both with our child, their siblings and the professionals, it is all too easy to lose sight of ourselves, our goals for our children and the reason why we are fighting at all. I know exactly how tiring it is to do battle with your child over the slightest thing, to face shaving foam and squirted toothpaste each morning, to go and put on your favourite piece of jewellery only to find it has been destroyed and to be on the receiving end ofphysical and verbal abuse. Nevertheless our children need us to be their advocates and whilst children with AD HD are notoriously difficult to parent as they just do not seem to respond to the ways of discipline and encouragement that work for other children, they also have a...
