• Place the newspaper down and set your materials on top.

• Give the child a coffee filter and let them paint a design on it with watercolors. As the child paints, the colors will spread through the filter.


• When the child is done, insert the diameter of the coffee filter into the clothespin and pull the filter up into the clothespin while shaping the wings on either side.

• Draw a face on the butterfly if desired.

• Tie a string onto the butterfly if the child would like to hang it somewhere.

• Allow the butterfly wings to dry—as they dry they will stiffen and stay in place more easily.
