The basic method of AIT, developed by Alfred Tomatis and Guy Berard, is to play electronically filtered music through headphones, working on the premise that auditory processing deficits can be improved when the ear is trained and correct tonal processing is restored.
Whilst it is reported to be extremely expensive to go for AIT, it is possible to do some form at home. I have purchased The Listening Programme by Advanced Brain Technologies and have had different programmes devised for each one ofthe boys by a trained AIT practitioner after speaking at length to her and filling in questionnaires. I was amazed at the fact that Joe was able to sit for fifteen minutes at a time and listen to the music and seemed much calmer afterwards. There was a definite improvement in Ben's speech and sound sensitivity after the programme, and Luke said that he felt far calmer in himself. We haven't used the programme for quite some time and writing this has reminded me that it is about time we did!

Autism is a developmental disorder that manifests itself in early childhood and affects the functioning of the brain, primarily in the areas of social interaction and communication. Children with autism look like other children but do not play or behave like other children. They must struggle daily to cope and connect with the world around them.
